SUSPENSE, CRIME

The Americano

From the streets of New York to the suburbs of Des Moines, Tom Steinmann can’t escape his past. Once labeled an “Americano” – a weak link – by the notorious Banfi Brothers mob, he’s spent five years hiding in the Witness Protection Program, masquerading as a gourmet specialist at a Midwestern supermarket chain.
His new life is a carefully constructed facade: the quiet house, the wife absorbed with making quilts, the innocent children attending public school. Tom’s routine has been his sanctuary. Boredom has meant staying alive. Until now.
When a dangerously nosy co-worker starts asking questions and corrupt grocery executives send Tom to Chicago to make suspicious pasta deliveries, Tom’s carefully constructed world begins to unravel. And just when a seductive pastry chef threatens the fragile stability of his marriage, Tom learns that the Banfi’s hitman is coming for him.
As shadows from his past emerge and the safety of his family hangs in the balance, Tom must make an impossible choice: maintain his cover or unleash the skills he learned in his former life in the mob.

Praise for The Americano

I’m a long time fan of the series authored by Lee Child, John Sanford, and Michael Connelly, and now I think I’ve found another – Troy Bond. In a classic midwest setting, his main character Tom Steinmann grinds away, trying to come back from past failures and manage typical American family struggles. And then it all gets more difficult and interesting at the same time on multiple fronts. I was going to check out the first few chapters and ended up reading it without stopping. The ending was unpredictable but satisfying. Tom Steinmann reminds me of a a self deprecating and sharp witted version of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher. I hope Bond gives us more because I can’t wait to read about what Steinmann does next!

Approachable, fun, intriguing, and just enough tease to keep you turning pages! I can really see the characters and how things play out when reading. Great choice to keep in your bag for when you just have a few minutes, or to settle in to spend an evening with
